Three teenagers arrested in early morning armed robbery in Kenner, likely linked to Metairie armed robbery

Kenner - Three teenagers, ages 15, 17, and 18, have been arrested in reference to an early morning armed robbery in Kenner.  Arrested are:

Darnell Nelson, 18, of New Orleans.  Nelson is charged with the crimes of armed robbery, aggravated flight from an officer, no driver’s license, and possession of marijuana .2 grams.

Cornell Woods, 17, of Metairie.   Woods is charged with armed robbery and flight from an officer.

A 15-year-old male juvenile, of Kenner, charged with the crimes of armed robbery, and possession of a handgun by a juvenile.

At approximately 03:35 a.m., Friday, November 24, 2017, the Kenner Police Department responded to an armed robbery that occurred near the intersection of Georgetown Drive and Dartmouth Place, in which a male and female, ages 35 and 32 were robbed at gunpoint.

KPD Officers met with the victims and learned while the victims were walking, a white Chevrolet Malibu stopped on the street near them, when two males exited the suspect vehicle from the passenger side and approached the victims.  The male suspects first asked for money for gas, when one of the male suspects produced a handgun with an extended magazine, and pushed the barrel of the gun into the chest of the male victim.  The second male suspect then grabbed the female victim by the armed and placed a handgun to her head.  At gunpoint, both victims were robbed of their cell phones, keys, and $20.00.  Both victims were then instructed to turn and walk away.

During a neighborhood canvass, Officer Joann Gallagher observed the suspect vehicle as it traveled on Clemson Place in Kenner.  The suspect vehicle fled leading officers in a vehicle chase which ended at Ole Miss Drive and East Oglethorpe Place in Kenner, where the two passengers fled the vehicle leading officers on a foot pursuit.  Darnell Nelson, who was the operator of the vehicle, was detained.  Officers apprehended Cornell Woods and the 15-year-old male juvenile during the foot pursuit.  On scene, all suspects were positively identified by the victims.  In addition, officers recovered two handguns (.45 caliber and 9 millimeter), which were not reported stolen at the time of this armed robbery.

At the time of this press release, all three suspects remain in custody.  No bond has been set for Darnell Nelson or Cornell Woods who was transferred to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.  The 15-year-old juvenile, was transferred to the Rivarde Juvenile Detention Center to await a continued custody hearing.

It should be noted, that the Kenner Police Department believes these three suspects were involved in an earlier armed robbery that occurred near the intersection of Kenwood Avenue and Waldo Street, in Metairie, which is presently under investigation by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Kenner Police Chief Michael J. Glaser urges anyone with information concerning this armed robbery or suspects to call Kenner Police Officer Shane Hollis or Detective Arthur Coll at (504) 712-2398, or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
