KPD Begins 2017 "Click It Or Ticket" Mobilization"

KENNERThe Kenner Police Department, which was awarded an overtime traffic enforcement grant this year from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, is reminding motorists again to “Click It Or Ticket.”  In order to enforce this reminder, KPD is stepping up its enforcement of seatbelt laws from Sunday, November 19 through Sunday, November 26, 2017.  As motorists take to the roads to celebrate the long Thanksgiving weekend, law enforcement officials across the nation will be ensuring that everyone buckles up.

“Thanksgiving weekend kicks off the holiday season, and we want to ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safe and sound,” said Kenner Chief of Police Michael Glaser.  “If you are not wearing your seat belt, you will be ticketed.”

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2014, 21,022 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in motor vehicle crashes.  49 percent of passenger vehicle occupants who were killed that year were unrestrained.  Younger motorists and men are particularly at risk.  NHTSA data shows that among teen and young adult passenger vehicle occupants, ages 13-15 and 25-34, who were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes, 59 percent were not buckled up at the time of the crash – the highest percentage of all age groups.

“We are determined to help bring these numbers down,” said Chief Glaser. “There are too many people dying on the roads, and many of those deaths could have been prevented if people took the simple step of wearing their seat belt.  We will be handing out tickets year-round to those who still haven’t gotten the message.”
