Kenner man arrested in morning armed robbery

Kenner - A Kenner man utilizing a sawed off shotgun and mask was arrested in a morning armed robbery that occurred in the 300 block of Webster Street, in Kenner.

At approximately 08:50 a.m., Thursday, November 21, 2013, Johnny Washington, 19, of 340 Webster Street, Kenner, armed himself with a sawed off shotgun and covered his face with a ski mask.  Washington laid in wait behind a neighboring home.  When the homeowner /victim (a 28-year-old male) went to check on a storage shed, he was confronted by Washington, who pointed the sawed off shotgun him and demanded his cell phone and wallet.  The victim fearing for his life gave Washington his property, at which time Washington then ordered the victim into the storage shed and instructed him to wait five minutes before coming out.

The victim was able to see Washington jump a neighboring fence at which time he (the victim) fled the storage shed and summoned help.  While summoning help and awaiting police arrival the victim observed the suspect (Johnny Washington) entering a neighboring home.    Once police arrived, the home (340 Webster Street) was surrounded however Washington was not located inside.  It was later learned that Washington had entered the home, his residence, changed clothes, and fled prior to police arrival.

Washington was known to Kenner Police due to prior arrests.  It was also known Washington resided at the home he was seen entering.  While detectives were preparing a search warrant for the property, Washington was located walking on 3rd Street in Kenner where he was detained.  The clothing and mask worn by Washington was found inside his bedroom.  Canine Madison with ATF assisted in the search of the premises and located the sawed off shotgun in the rear yard of Washingtons home.

Washington was interviewed and confessed to the armed robbery citing that he owed people money.  Washington was charged with the crimes of armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain felonies.  Washington has a prior a felony conviction for simple burglary and resisting police by force and / or violence.  At the time of this press release, Washington remains in custody, no bond has been set.
