Kenner Police arrest woman for child desertion while shopping at Esplanade Mall

KENNER - On Saturday, August 7, 2010, at approximately 1158 hours, the Kenner Police Department received a telephone call reporting that three small children were left unattended in a motor vehicle, on the east side of the Esplanade Mall.  Upon officer’s arrival, they found three children ages, 7 months, 2 and 4 years old, locked inside a 1999 Mazda Millennium.   The children were crying loudly and sweating profusely.  The windows were rolled up.  The engine was not running nor was the air conditioner on inside the vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, officers located and arrested, Carist Carter, 26, who provided the home address of 720 Salcedo Street, in New Orleans, as she returned to the vehicle.  Carter is the mother to the two year old, and aunt to the other two children.  Carter admitted to leaving the three children in the car unattended while she shopped inside the Esplanade Mall.   Carter was charged with three counts of child desertion.  At the time of this press release, she remains in the custody of the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center, in Gretna.  No bond has been set.

Chief Steve Caraway urges anyone with information concerning this incident to call the Kenner Police Department at (504) 712-2222 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
