Two students charged with aggravated arson concerning fire at Roosevelt Middle School

Kenner - On Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at 11:20 a.m., Kenner Police Officer Larry Cosse, a school resource officer at Roosevelt Middle School responded to a fire alarm in the Annex building which is located north of the main school building.  The school was immediately evacuated as Officer Cosse approached the area and observed smoke coming from the boys’ bathroom.  The Kenner Fire Department arrived on scene and immediately extinguished the fire.  Upon inspecting the bathroom, it was discovered that someone had intentionally set fire to a toilet paper dispenser and the stall that was connected.

A short time later, Officer Cosse learned that just before the fire, two students had permission from their teacher to go to the restroom.  Both students were separated and brought to the main office area. Both students, a 14 year old from the Susan Park subdivision, and a 13 year old from the Westgate subdivision admitted that they intentionally set the fire.  Both were charged with the crime of aggravated arson.

Detective Joseph McRae and Officer Larry Cosse are in charge of the investigation.

Chief Steve Caraway urges anyone with information concerning this incident, to call the Kenner Police Department at (504) 712-2222 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
