Click It or Ticket Effort
KENNER
— During
the month of May, the Kenner Police Department joined with state
and local law enforcement agencies and highway safety groups in
supporting the aggressive national Click It or Ticket seat belt
enforcement campaign, which took place from May 18 through May
31, 2009. During
the period, police ticketed unbelted vehicle occupants around
the clock. The
Kenner Police Department issued a total of 295 tickets in
reference to improper seat belt usage during this period.
Seat belts are the single most effective piece
of safety equipment in a vehicle, yet NHTSA observational
studies show that nearly one out of five Americans still fails
to wear a seat belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle.
When worn correctly, seat belts have been proven to
reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car
occupants by 45 percent and by 60 percent in pickup trucks, SUVs
and minivans.
The Click It or Ticket mobilization effort was
supported by an $8 million national paid advertising campaign,
which, along with additional state advertising, encouraged every
driver and passenger to buckle up, especially at night.
