Teacher / tutor arrested by Kenner Police

KENNER On March 17, 2008, at 11:55 a.m., Michael Lyons, age 36, of 4141 East Loyola Drive, Kenner, was arrested at Isidore Newman School after a 16-year-old female acknowledged having a sexual relationship with him on several occasions in Kenner within the last year. Michael Lyons was the child’s former school teacher and tutor. Police will not release the name of the former school to protect the identity of the child.

Through the course of the investigation, police discovered that Michael Lyons had given the child a cellular phone as a means of remaining in contact with her and concealing their relationship from the child’s parents.

Michael Lyons was charged with 5 counts of Felony Carnal Knowledge of a Juvenile. If convicted on each count, Michael Lyons faces a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison.

Detective Joseph McRae is in charge of the investigation. Chief Steve Caraway encourages anyone with information on this incident or others to contact the Kenner Police Department at (504) 712-2222 or Crimestoppers at (504) 821-1111. Callers may remain anonymous.
