Vehicle Crash Arrest

Kenner-On Thursday, January 3, 2008, James Shafer, 18, of Metairie,  was arrested and charged with the crimes of negligent injuring (4-counts), reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile (3-counts).  The arrest occurred as the result of an investigation of a traffic crash that occurred on Sunday, December 30, 2007, at 0240 hours, in the 2200 block of Williams Boulevard, Kenner, which left 4 teenagers injured with both critical and moderate injures.

On December 30, 2007, Shafer was driving a 2000 Dodge Neon, in the 2200 block of Williams Boulevard.  The investigation revealed that at the time of the crash, Shafer had been swerving from lane to lane, “shuffle steering” the steering wheel in a playful manner, and traveling to fast for the weather and road conditions (heavy rain and wet roadway).  Shafer lost control of the vehicle, ran off the roadway, and crashed into a light pole.

(1)    The back seat passenger a 13 year old female juvenile from Houma was critically injured.  The 13-year-old has a skull fracture and remains in critical condition at University Hospital.

(2)    A 16 year old male juvenile (rear passenger) from Kenner suffered a concussion.  He was treated and released from East Jefferson Hospital.

(3)    A 14 year old female juvenile, from St. Rose, who was sitting on the lap of the front seat passenger, received a dislocated shoulder and elbow.  In addition her jaw was broken in two places.  She remains hospitalized at East Jefferson Hospital.

(4)    A 17 year old male (front passenger) from Kenner, received 3 stitches in his upper lip, a fractured right cheek bone, and 4 stitches to the back of his head.  He was treated and released from Ochsner Kenner.

The contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile charge is based on the fact that Shafer aided and permitted the three juveniles to remain away from their residence without their parents’ permission or knowledge.

Chief Steve Caraway urges anyone with information concerning this incident, to call the Kenner Police Department at (504) 712-2222 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.

Officer George Ruiz is the investigating officer.
