S.R.T. &
S.W.A.T.
The Special Response Team (S.R.T.)
consists of seven officers who are trained in marine rescue,
extrication (the removal of victims from vehicles in crashes),
and management of hazardous materials. S.R.T. assists
detectives in surveillance and stakeouts and maintains the
department's special equipment, such as the Mobile Command
Center, S.W.A.T. van, rescue truck and boat, and Kawasaki mules.
The S.R.T. officers are cross-trained as S.W.A.T. members and
they are also trained as first-responders and are certified in
CPR and First Aid.
S.R.T. officers receive civil
disturbance training and are taught how to handle and disperse
various types of unruly gatherings while using the latest
technology and the safest, most professional means to prevent
injury to all involved. They learn how to handle crowds
and disturbances, practice prevention, intervention,
operational, less than lethal force, mobile tactics and train in
officer-citizen rescues. The officers also practice field
formations and learn how to use chemical agents, distraction
devices, batons and protective gear. Some officers receive
Specialty Impact Munitions Certification by learning how to use
munitions, such as projectiles and launchers like foam, wood,
rubber, sponge and bean bags. In addition, some officers
are certified to instruct other officers in civil disturbance
control.
The Special Weapons and Tactics Team
(S.W.A.T.) is comprised of 14 officers who are trained to use
various weapons, firearms, tear gas, chemical agents and fiber
optic audio and video surveillance equipment. The S.W.A.T.
Team is also deployed for high-risk building entries, hostage
situations and high-risk search warrants. Because their
services are essential in emergencies, both the S.R.T. and
S.W.A.T. teams receive monthly training to maintain their
skills.
