Internal Affairs
Division
The Internal Affairs Division performs a
staff function in support of the Office of the Chief of Police.
One lieutenant, who works at the direction of the Chief of
Police, supervises the Internal Affairs Division, which manages
administrative and disciplinary matters (Internal Affairs),
recruits and hires, conducts applicant background
investigations, oversees personnel issues (Human Resources
Unit), and assists in the formation of departmental policies and
regulations, and oversees the Legal Affairs Division.
Two full-time Internal Affairs
detectives respond to and resolve all citizens' complaints
concerning police services, investigate alleged personnel
misconduct, conduct administrative investigations of infractions
of departmental policies, and review use of force incidents to
ensure compliance with federal, state, and departmental
guidelines. Additionally, Internal Affairs processes
complaints based on personal observations, periodic inspections
and audits made by department supervisors. This ensures
consistent application and reinforcement of standards and
demonstrates the department's personal commitment to ensuring
that all members follow policies.
On November 17, 2001, after undergoing a
rigorous on-site assessment, the Kenner Police Department earned
official accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for
Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The purpose of the
Commission's accreditation program is to improve delivery of law
enforcement service by requiring that law enforcement agencies
meet all or most of 443 standards, developed by law enforcement
practitioners, covering a wide range of up-to-date law
enforcement topics. Although the Kenner Police Department
was forced to withdraw its membership in CALEA due to budget
cuts, the department continues to maintain many of CALEA's
standards. The CALEA office was managed by a full-time
Internal Affairs detective.
